What has J&B actually done in Portland?

What does coastal weather do to paint in Portland?
Portland is coastal, and that shortens exterior paint life. Salt-laden air, wind-driven rain off Casco Bay and a hard freeze-thaw cycle attack coatings and the wood underneath them, so exteriors here need repainting sooner than inland houses and the prep matters more than the paint you choose.
In practice that means moisture is the enemy on both sides of the wall. On the outside, a coating fails from underneath when it goes onto wood that is still damp or onto a previous layer that has already lost its bond — so we wash, let it genuinely dry, scrape back to a sound edge, sand the transition, spot-prime bare wood and caulk before any finish coat. On a new build we are often in earlier than that, doing exterior prep and priming alongside the siding crew, which is what the Portland job in our photos below involved.
Inside, the recurring Portland problem is ice damming. Snow melts, refreezes at the eaves, and water backs up under the shingles and lands on a ceiling or in the top of a wall. By the time it shows as a stain, the insulation above is often wet. Those become repair jobs before they become paint jobs: open it up, dry it out, replace wet insulation, reboard, then finish.
Portland's older peninsula and near-neighborhood housing also means a lot of walls that have been patched repeatedly over decades. Paint does not hide that — it highlights it. Where a room has been patched by several different hands, we skim the wall flat first so the finish coat reads as one surface, and we say at the estimate when we think a room needs that, because it changes the price.
Exterior season here is short. We plan Portland exterior work from roughly May into October and we will not put a finish coat on when it will not cure before evening damp sets in.
